Cal Duo Advances to NCBA Regional Finals; Full Results

Cal's Jose Jimenez (right, with coach Jim Riksheim) will be fighting for a Regional title tomorrow.

The semifinals at the National Collegiate Boxing Association Western Regionals are complete, and Northern California fighters had a relatively rough day on the scoreboard.

Only two pugilists from Cal advanced to Saturday's finals at the El Dorado Reno Casino in junior middleweight Jose "Jay" Jimenez (156 lbs.) and middleweight Juan Ramos (165 lbs.).  Jimenez stopped San Jose State's Gabriel Sanchez and Ramos did the same to Texas Southern's Jalen Moore.

Despite losing Friday night, USF bantamweight Jaren Hayashi (119 lbs.) and middleweight Sebastian Doerner (165 lbs.) will actually make it to Nationals after all.  After falling by decision to UNLV's Vanh Than, Hayashi took a wild-card spot because there weren't enough bantamweights to fill all eight seeds.

Meanwhile, Doerner dropped a close decision to San Jose State's Andrew Cabatic in Thursday's quarterfinals but was voted in following the Spartan's stoppage defeat to the Air Force Academy's Casey Habluetzel.

In addition to Sanchez and Cabatic's exits, the San Jose State pair of welterweight Oscar Gomez (147 lbs.) and heavyweight Dalton Osuka (195 lbs.) saw their respective runs at Regionals and successful seasons come to an end.

All of the fighters who advanced to Saturday's finals have already earned a spot in Nationals and will compete for a Regional title and seeding next month.

Special thanks to USA Boxing's Lydia Martinez Razo for keeping Norcalboxing.net posted on the action!
