Watsonville's Moreno Fights Kentikian for Flyweight Title

By Ryan Maquiñana

Watsonville's Carina Moreno fights Susi Kentikian for the vacant WBA flyweight title Saturday at Castello in Dusseldorf, Germany.  Kentikian came in at 110.89 pounds, while Moreno tipped the scale at an even 112 pounds.

Kentikian (29-1, 16 KOs) is coming off a majority decision defeat to San Jose's Melissa McMorrow in May.  While the Hamburg, Germany, resident lost the WBO and WIBF belts to the Bay Area fighter, the WBA strap was not on the line.

Moreno (22-5, 6 KOs) has lost four of five, but the former strawweight and junior flyweight world titleholder is primed for one more championship run.

ONTARIO, Calif. – Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero can put his megaphone away for now.  After defeating Andre Berto by unanimous decision Saturday night, the message resonated loud and clear.  He belongs with the elite fighters in the world.

In a good old-fashioned streetfight that was contested mainly on the inside, the pride of Gilroy successfully defended his WBC welterweight interim belt front of 4,765 spectators at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

“My dad [Ruben] wanted me to work my jab in the first few rounds, but I wanted to punish [Berto],” Guerrero said.  “[Berto] said he was looking forward to an execution.  It was time to put up or shut up, and that’s what I did.”

Full Results from Sacramento: Page Stopped in 2 By Yusubov

By Ryan Maquiñana
Norcalboxing.net

Yusubov (left, with chief second Eddie Rodriquez) following his win over Page.

Pittsburg's 41-year-old James Page, who was making a comeback after 11 years away from the ring, was stopped in two rounds by Rahman Yusubov at the Four Points by Sheraton in Sacramento on Saturday night.

"In the first round, James stunned Yusubov with a straight right," said Eddie Rodriquez, Yusubov's chief second in the corner.  "I thought he was going to stop Rahman, because it was all James.  I told Rahman not to stop leaning back and to slip punches, and he did just that.  When he hit James with the left hook in the second, that started the damage, and then he put him away with the right hand."

Page (25-5, 19 KOs), a former world titleholder at welterweight who had completed a federal prison sentence, had moved up to junior middleweight to fight Yusubov (9-9, 7 KOs), a native of Azerbaijan who was training himself for the fight.

"James looked good in the first round.  You could see his power was still there.  But after watching the second, I want him to re-evaluate where he goes from this point forward," added Rodriquez, who has known Page since the amateurs.

UNDERCARD

Hayward junior middleweight Aaron Coley (4-0, 2 KOs) stayed unbeaten with a second round knockout of Chad Dietmeyer (1-2).

"Coley's a thinking man's fighter," Rodriquez said. "He works at you and picks at you, and Dietmeyer was tough, but Coley had too much ring smarts."

Sacramento junior featherweight John Abella (3-0-1, 2 KOs) and Salvador Cifuentes (1-4-1) fought to a technical draw after an accidental clash of heads in the third round.

Richmond welterweight Aldwayne Simpson (4-0, 2 KOs) edged out Joaquin Chavez (1-5, 1 KO), capturing a majority decision.

Sacramento featherweight Alberto Torres (2-0) outpointed Christian Navarro (0-2) by unanimous decision.

To open the night, Maricela Cornejo (2-0, 1 KO) stopped Sacramento's Terri Lowe (0-1) in the third frame of a women's middleweight bout.

The card was promoted by O.P.P. Presents.

Mike Dallas Sr., Bakersfield PAL Boss, Succumbs to Leukemia

By Ryan Maquiñana
Norcalboxing.net

It is with great sadness to report that Mike Dallas Sr., longtime head of the Bakersfield PAL, passed away Wednesday night due to a bout with leukemia.  He was 45.

Dallas Sr. was beloved by the Central California community for his work building a successful amateur program, but more importantly, for his selfless contributions affecting the lives of local youth looking for a positive outlet from the dangers of the streets.

"He was a mentor to me," said pro middleweight Paul Mendez, who learned the basics under Dallas Sr. as an amateur.  "He was always there to talk to about anything, not just boxing, and you knew he really cared.  He would always take time out to bring busloads of kids to the tournaments, and we would win."

While Dallas Sr. would steer his son Mike Jr. to a 115-12 amateur record that included gold medals at both the 2000 PAL International Junior Olympics and 2006 National PAL tournament, the Bakersfield PAL as a whole had also become a perennial force under his watch.

In 2004, Mendez was part of a squad that won the Oxnard PAL team title.  Most recently, middleweight Daniel Valdivia added a National PAL championship to his vast trophy case in October.

"This is a tremendous loss for all of us.  Mike was my dear friend, a great man who meant a lot to Bakersfield, especially the kids," said CCA president Armando Mancinas.  "His leadership and inspiration he provided to everyone will always be remembered.  He's in my prayers, and he will be missed."

Mike Jr., a promising junior welterweight contender in the professional ranks, will now carry on with pursuing a dream he shared with his father--to be crowned a world champion.

"We're all going to keep doing what we learned from Mike Sr. and keep his memory alive," Mendez said.  "As for little Mike, I know he's going to make his dad proud and win the title."

Fernando Guerrero Stops Candelo in Six

By Ryan Maquiñana
Norcalboxing.net

Middleweight contender Fernando Guerrero, now based out of Hayward, stopped J.C. Candelo in six rounds at the Humble Civic Center in Humble, Tex., Saturday night.

Guerrero (25-1, 18 KOs), originally from Salisbury, Md., entered the ring for the first time with new trainer Virgil Hunter, and the normally aggressive boxer-puncher was more methodical and measured in the manner by which he broke Candelo (32-12-4, 21 KOs) down.

After outboxing Candelo for the first three frames, a one-two from the southpaw Guerrero put his Colombian foe on the canvas. Although he would survive the round, Candelo would soon be wobbled in the opening seconds of the sixth with another accurate left hand, prompting the referee to call a halt to the bout. Official time was 0:12.

“I saw that he was a veteran, and he took his time getting up [in the fourth round], so I took my time in getting him out,” Guerrero told Fox Sports ringside commentator Paul Malignaggi.

Pinell Foe Fails to Make Weight; Fight Still On

By Ryan Maquiñana
Norcalboxing.net

San Francisco’s Ricardo Pinell will make his long awaited pro debut Saturday night at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim against Ulises Sierra (1-0).

However, the former City Golden Gloves champion will have to do it at a weight disadvantage, as Sierra failed to meet the contracted limit of 165 pounds, coming in almost five over at 169.8.

As a result, Sierra was fined 20 percent of his purse, half of which went to Pinell and the other half going to the California State Athletic Commission.

“I preach to my guys, you always have to be ready,” said Pinell’s trainer/manager Eddie Croft of San Mateo’s B Street Boxing. “Our guys are prepared all the time, and [Sierra] is not. We’re going to push the pace, get him tired, and get him out of there.”

Friday’s debacle wasn’t the first time Pinell has been a victim of controversy via the scale. In September, while the smooth-boxing southpaw made the agreed-upon weight of 160 pounds, his foe Jerome Buchanan came in at an outlandish 174 pounds, effectively nixing the bout.
