San
Francisco’s Ricardo Pinell will make his long awaited pro debut
Saturday night at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim against Ulises Sierra
(1-0).
However, the former City Golden Gloves champion
will have to do it at a weight disadvantage, as Sierra failed to meet
the contracted limit of 165 pounds, coming in almost five over at
169.8.
As a result, Sierra was fined 20 percent of his
purse, half of which went to Pinell and the other half going to the
California State Athletic Commission.
“I preach to my
guys, you always have to be ready,” said Pinell’s trainer/manager Eddie
Croft of San Mateo’s B Street Boxing. “Our guys are prepared all the
time, and [Sierra] is not. We’re going to push the pace, get him tired,
and get him out of there.”
Friday’s debacle wasn’t the
first time Pinell has been a victim of controversy via the scale. In
September, while the smooth-boxing southpaw made the agreed-upon weight
of 160 pounds, his foe Jerome Buchanan came in at an outlandish 174
pounds, effectively nixing the bout.
