CSN Weekly Spotlight: Knight Makes First Title Defense in Mexico (With VIDEO)
By Ryan Maquiñana
CSNBayArea.com
If 2011 was a year to remember for Bay Area women’s pro boxing, then 2012 has its supporters looking for a time machine to speed through it.
Last month, San Jose’s Melissa McMorrow went to Mexico to fight for a vacant flyweight championship only to lose via controversial decision. Daly City’s Ana Julaton fared no better, leaving her WBO junior featherweight title belt in Argentina after a points defeat two Fridays ago.
Ava “The Lady of Boxing” Knight will aim to break the trend when she travels south of the border to defend her IBF flyweight title for the very first time Saturday.

VIDEOS: NorCal P4P Top 10, Raquel Miller, Denis Madriz Updates
By Ryan Maquiñana
Norcalboxing.net
It was a busy weekend in San Francisco, as I spent part of it in the Comcast SportsNet studio on 3rd and Folsom with Henry Wofford breaking down the NorCal Pound-for-Pound Top 10 list.
Here's the video below:
I also took some time to visit SFC Boxing on 7th and Market, where I interviewed resident IBF flyweight champ Ava Knight before her first title defense in Los Cabos, Mexico, next Saturday against Hongfah Tor Buamas of Thailand.
Knight has enlisted the help of two-division world champion Carina Moreno for sparring. While I'm saving that video interview for the CSNBayArea.com NorCal Boxing Spotlight this coming Thursday, I do have a couple other ones for you today.
S.F. Bayview's Raquel Miller, the Olympic Trials bronze medalist at 165 pounds and national champ at 152, spoke to me about her upcoming trip to Colorado Springs to train with Team USA for her first international competition in Canada next month. Check it out below:
Another SFC fighter, featherweight Denis Madriz, let me know about his next fight May 12 in Woodland on the Solo Boxeo Tecate undercard. He's trying to pursue a rematch of his draw with Jesus Partida last year. Here's the brief interview:

A Few Thoughts on Bert Sugar, Magdaleno-Beltran, Garcia-Morales, Kirkland-Molina
By Ryan Maquiñana
Norcalboxing.net
First of all, my condolences to the family of the legendary Bert Sugar. The stories about him were true; he was a great guy. I hope he will be given the media tribute he deserves.
In terms of the rest of the weekend, for those who saw Diego Magdaleno scrape himself off the canvas to stop Fernando Beltran on "ShoBox: The New Generation" on Friday, we spoke on the phone at length after the fight. His team was adamant on facing IBF junior lightweight champ Juan Carlos Salgado next. Here's my article on our discussion for BoxingScene.com: http://www.boxingscene.com/team-magdaleno-ready-we-want-juan-carlos-salgado--50988
As far as Saturday night's HBO card, for the record, I don't always get 'em right, but I picked Danny Garcia to defeat Erik Morales by decision as evidenced by my prediction on Ring Magazine's website earlier in the week. Here's the link: http://ringtv.craveonline.com/blog/172027-who-wins-morales-garcia-the-experts-decide?start=1

The Air Force Academy dominated Saturday's NCBA Western Regionals action in front of a near-sellout crowd at the El Dorado Hotel in Reno, with 10 Falcons emerging victorious out of the 12 divisional final bouts.
However, Northern California schools were not shut out, as Cal 165-pounder Juan Ramos took home the middleweight title, edging Air Force's Casey Habluetzel in a close 3-2 decision.

Cal Duo Advances to NCBA Regional Finals; Full Results
By Ryan Maquiñana
Norcalboxing.net
The semifinals at the National Collegiate Boxing Association Western Regionals are complete, and Northern California fighters had a relatively rough day on the scoreboard.
Only two pugilists from Cal advanced to Saturday's finals at the El Dorado Reno Casino in junior middleweight Jose "Jay" Jimenez (156 lbs.) and middleweight Juan Ramos (165 lbs.). Jimenez stopped San Jose State's Gabriel Sanchez and Ramos did the same to Texas Southern's Jalen Moore.
Despite losing Friday night, USF bantamweight Jaren Hayashi (119 lbs.) and middleweight Sebastian Doerner (165 lbs.) will actually make it to Nationals after all. After falling by decision to UNLV's Vanh Than, Hayashi took a wild-card spot because there weren't enough bantamweights to fill all eight seeds.
Meanwhile, Doerner dropped a close decision to San Jose State's Andrew Cabatic in Thursday's quarterfinals but was voted in following the Spartan's stoppage defeat to the Air Force Academy's Casey Habluetzel.
In addition to Sanchez and Cabatic's exits, the San Jose State pair of welterweight Oscar Gomez (147 lbs.) and heavyweight Dalton Osuka (195 lbs.) saw their respective runs at Regionals and successful seasons come to an end.
All of the fighters who advanced to Saturday's finals have already earned a spot in Nationals and will compete for a Regional title and seeding next month.

Northern California Pound-for-Pound Top 10 (March 2012)
By Ryan Maquiñana

After a lengthy winning streak over the past several months, the CSNBayArea.com Northern California Pound-for-Pound Top 10 finally saw some movement after two fighters were defeated in world title bouts.
Our 14-member voting panel had No. 4 Eloy Perez dipping to eighth following February’s stoppage loss to Adrien Broner and pending appeal of a positive post-fight drug test. Ana Julaton fell from seventh to tenth following her decision defeat to Yesica Marcos last Friday.

VIDEO(S): Julaton's Ill-Fated Trip Part of Disturbing Trend in Argentina
By Ryan Maquiñana
Norcalboxing.net
If Argentinian promoter Osvaldo Rivero thought that last Friday’s junior featherweight title bout between his fighter Yesica Marcos and WBO champ Ana Julaton would restore his country’s reputation as a fair place to hold a fight, one look at the YouTube footage would tell you he failed.
The Filipino national anthem was cut short, and "The Star-Spangled Banner" wasn’t played for the Daly City native. Referee Robert Ramirez Sr. did a hardly objective job, chiding only Julaton for perceived fouls that did not occur from my viewpoint. None of the three judges came from America or the Philippines. Even the local TV color commentator shamelessly told viewers to score the second round 10-10 even though Julaton had floored Marcos and won the rest of the frame. (This same "analyst" gave the other nine rounds to the hometown challenger. Naturally.)
Based on what I observed, I’m only half-joking when I say the Bay Area fighter would have needed a knockout just to secure a draw in San Martin. Julaton, a stylist by trade, found herself forced into the unfamiliar position of transforming into a slugger. These uncomfortable new clothes did not suit her well; while she lost the fight by my tally, it was definitely not by six or seven points, which is what the scorecards would erroneously impart.

EXCLUSIVE: Robert Guerrero's First Interview Since Signing Contract to Fight Aydin
By Ryan Maquiñana
BoxingScene.com/Norcalboxing.net
Aydin (left) meets the southpaw Guerrero in HP Pavilion on July 28.
"For all these years I have been waiting for a major fight in the U.S.A., but nobody wanted to fight me,” Aydin (23-0, 17 KOs) said. “Andre Berto ducked me over years, Victor Ortiz decided that it would be better for his career to lose to Mayweather than to me, and Mayweather himself obviously prefers doing time in jail to stepping in the ring with me.”
If Aydin’s propensity to call out the big names sounds familiar, it’s because Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KOs) has felt the same way about being avoided by them. However, the similarities stop there, as Aydin, a self-proclaimed “Ghostbuster” from Trabzon, Turkey, will meet Guerrero on the aforementioned date for the WBC interim welterweight title.

Norcalboxing.net/BoxingScene.com has been advised that Golden Boy Promotions will return to Woodland, Calif., on May 12, with the card to be tentatively televised by TeleFutura on their “Solo Boxeo Tecate” series.
The
Woodland Community Center, about a 30-minute drive northwest of Sacramento,
hosted a sellout crowd of over 1,000 earlier this month. In that show, also on TeleFutura, junior
lightweight contender Vicente Escobedo (25-3, 15 KOs) wowed his hometown fans
with a first-round knockout of Lonnie Smith in the main event.
Escobedo
has been one of the names mentioned to headline the card. BoxingScene.com first reported that “Chente”
is in the mix to challenge WBO 130-pound world champion Adrien Broner, who is
also promoted by Golden Boy, sometime this year.

San Ardo junior featherweight Roman Morales (10-0, 6 KOs) continued his unbeaten run through the pro ranks with a six-round unanimous decision against Santa Maria's Rufino Serrano (12-4).
After a relatively even first round that could have gone to Serrano, Morales took control of the action behind a versatile display of power, ring savvy, and a vicious body attack. As the rounds wore on, Morales felt more comfortable in the ring, switching to southpaw and continuing to rip Serrano with left hooks to the midsection.

CSN Spotlight of the Week: New-Look Julaton Takes Aim at Marcos
Julaton and Marcos size each other up at the weigh-in. (Alfredo Perez)
“I’m sick of all these fighters getting a chance on TV when they don’t even fill up the stands,” she told CSNBayArea.com before this Friday’s matchup with Yesica Marcos in San Martin, Argentina. “I’m a fan of Guillermo Rigondeaux, but there were more people at my fight against Kelsey Jeffries without any TV backing than there were for his world title fight, and he gets the shot on TV. He gets the shot. This is where I’m at right now.”
In the past, her “Hurricane” nickname was emblematic of her whirlwind fighting style, not her demeanor. Not today.

Gesta Might Face New Opponent on April 14
By Ryan Maquiñana
BoxingScene.com
Unbeaten lightweight contender Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta
might not be facing Luis Arceo on April 14 after all, according to his
manager/trainer Vincent Parra.
“Arceo’s tough as nails, and he’d be a good opponent, but
from my understanding there’s a couple other names that are in the mix now. He’ll still be on the card, but Mercito might
be fighting someone else at the end of the day,” he told BoxingScene.com
Wednesday morning.
Gesta (24-0-1, 12 KOs), a 24-year-old Filipino southpaw
based out of San Diego, Calif., was slated to see action in Las Vegas before
the Brandon Rios-Yuriorkis Gamboa main event, which as of the moment is in
flux.
Arceo, a 33-year-old from Aguascalientes, Mexico, who now
resides a stone’s throw away from Gesta in San Ysidro, Calif., is coming off an
eighth-round knockout of Misael Castillo last month. A year ago, he battled Ricardo Dominguez—who dropped
a lopsided decision to Gesta back in November—to a split decision loss.
Gesta, who will be fighting under the Top Rank banner for
the fourth time, has seen his name pop up in discussions to fight Mexico’s Juan
Manuel Marquez on July 14 in Arlington, Texas, at the gargantuan Cowboys
Stadium.
By that time, Marquez might be in possession of the WBO
interim junior welterweight belt, which in all likelihood will become the
full-fledged title if current holder Timothy Bradley continues to campaign at
welterweight following his June 9 fight with Manny Pacquiao.
The Mexican legend meets Argentine Rene Cuenca for the
vacant strap, also on April 14, but in Mexico City.
Whether or not Gesta is on a collision course to meet
Marquez, it is becoming readily apparent that his next fight will serve as a de
facto audition for the major networks on his viability in such a role. Parra outlined his fighter’s plans for the
summer.
“We think we’re ready for a title shot now, and this fight
is going to show that,” he said. “As far
as July 14, it doesn’t matter if it’s a title shot at 135 pounds against a
Miguel Vazquez or at 140 against Marquez.
He’s hungry to show what he can do.”
Gesta is currently in camp, which is taking place in San
Diego and has involved several local fighters, including featherweight Aaron
Garcia (10-3-2, 2 KOs), junior welterweight Adrian Vargas, and Tijuana-based
junior lightweight Emilio Bojorquez (19-1, 13 KOs). Highly regarded 140-pound prospect Antonio
Orozco (13-0, 9 KOs) has pledged to coming in for sparring next week.

Quillin-Wright Back on for 5/26; Kid Chocolate Speaks
By Ryan Maquiñana
BoxingScene.com
Unbeaten middleweight contender Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin’s
clash with Winky Wright has been finally set for May 26.
The bout will take place as the Showtime-televised
co-feature to the main event of Antonio Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode. The venue has yet to be determined, as
California, Florida, and even Texas have been discussed.
“I’ve only been in training for a week and a half in
Hollywood at Wild Card [Boxing Club] and I’ve already sparred over 10 rounds,”
the 28-year-old Quillin (26-0, 20 KOs) told BoxingScene.com. “When fight night comes, I’ll be ready to
show people why I’m at where I’m at, and that I deserve the big fights to come
my way.”
Originally, “Kid Chocolate” was slated to meet Wright (51-5-1,
25 KOs), a former undisputed junior middleweight champion, on the May 5 Miguel
Cotto-Floyd Mayweather pay-per-view undercard.
Now the native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, seems to have
landed on his feet, likely with the help of the new member on his team.
“Everything’s set in play,” Quillin said. “Al Haymon is working with me as far as my
advisor now, so that shows you the power he’s got.”
Quillin is coming off an impressive sixth-round stoppage of
Craig McEwan on HBO last November. He
stressed the importance of consistently honing his craft and pointed to a
couple of changes in his lifestyle.
“I just got a tattoo on my left shin of the bonsai tree,”
Quillin said. “It symbolizes the
tranquility in my life and showing growth as a human being. For that matter, I gave up drinking.
“I like to have fun, but it definitely has an effect on a
professional fighter. When you drink,
you might not always be ready to give your best in the gym the next day, so I
gave it up. I want to be a powerhouse
nonstop.”
Meanwhile, the 40-year-old Wright hasn’t fought in almost
three years, with the last bout a wide decision loss to Paul Williams. Undoubtedly one of the best southpaw stylists
of this era, the questions for this fight are whether the pride of St.
Petersburg, Fla., has anything left in the tank, and Quillin’s ability to penetrate
Wright’s guard.
“I’ve been keeping my weight down to 172 pounds so far,”
said Quillin, who is working with trainer Eric Brown. “Of course, when I fight Winky, I have to
keep my volume up. But I’m not just the
type of fighter who just throws a bunch of punches just to throw them. Whatever punches I put on his ass got to come
with something so he feels them.”
The news of the May 26 date was initially reported by Steve
Kim of MaxBoxing.

Details of Top Rank’s Suit vs. Gamboa, Unnamed Defendants
By Ryan
Maquiñana
“Top Rank believes one or more rival boxing promotion companies and unknown individuals associated with them are at the root of Gamboa’s wrongful conduct,” it continued.
“After agreeing to fight Rios, Gamboa requested, received, and accepted in excess of $70,000 in advances from Top Rank and Arena in anticipation of the Rios bout,” the complaint stated.

Gamboa has been sued by Top Rank. (Chris Farina)
Based
on a document obtained by Norcalboxing.net, promoter Top Rank has filed a
complaint against Cuban star Yuriorkis Gamboa for allegedly breaching a contract that
would pit him against former lightweight champ Brandon Rios on April 14 in Las
Vegas.
"Since
mid-2009, Top Rank has invested millions of dollars to develop, advance,
and promote Gamboa’s career,” alleged the complaint by Daniel Petrocelli and
David Marroso of O’Melveny & Myers LLP. “Under Top Rank’s
financial commitment and stewardship—just the right mix and selection of
opponents, venues, broadcasters, and sponsors—Gamboa is on the verge of
stardom.
"Now, having benefited from Top Rank’s considerable history, talents, connections, and success, Gamboa willfully breached multiple obligations to Top Rank and has clearly and unequivocally announced his intent to repudiate the contracts in their entirety."
"Now, having benefited from Top Rank’s considerable history, talents, connections, and success, Gamboa willfully breached multiple obligations to Top Rank and has clearly and unequivocally announced his intent to repudiate the contracts in their entirety."
The
complaint, filed in Federal District Court in Nevada, also blames a number of
unnamed “John Does” responsible “in some manner” for urging Gamboa to break
said agreement with Top Rank.
“Top Rank believes one or more rival boxing promotion companies and unknown individuals associated with them are at the root of Gamboa’s wrongful conduct,” it continued.
“These
‘poachers’ see what everyone sees—a gifted boxer platformed by Top Rank for
superstardom—and they want to unfairly capitalize on what Top Rank orchestrated
and built. Upon information and belief, the rival promoters and others promised
Gamboa that if he breaches his contract with Top Rank, they will promote his
fights.”
Top
Rank also revealed the monetary aspects of the agreement, which included a
hefty advance and a purse “four times his contractually-guaranteed minimum.”
“After agreeing to fight Rios, Gamboa requested, received, and accepted in excess of $70,000 in advances from Top Rank and Arena in anticipation of the Rios bout,” the complaint stated.
The
complaint concluded with a request for judgment against Gamboa and “[d]irect and consequential damages in an amount
to be proven at trial in excess of $1,000,000,” as well as “reasonable attorney
fees” and “[a]ll costs of the suit incurred.”
Eloy Perez Tests Positive After Broner Fight
By Ryan Maquiñana
BoxingScene.comIn an unfortunate development, a source close to the situation has advised BoxingScene.com that Eloy Perez has tested positive for cocaine following his fourth-round stoppage loss to Adrien Broner in St. Louis on February 25.
Team Perez reportedly received a letter from the Missouri commission on Monday stating the positive result. His license will be revoked indefinitely pending a hearing.
The Garcia Boxing Management Team, which handles Perez, gave BoxingScene.com this statement when asked about the matter:
“On Monday, March 12, Garcia Boxing has released Eloy Perez of any contractual obligation. Due to pending matters, we are not at liberty to discuss his personal or professional conduct.”
Come back to BoxingScene.com later for more information as it becomes readily available.

Fight Feed's New Home is Norcalboxing.net!
EDITOR'S NOTE: It is with great
pride that Norcalboxing.net welcomes local boxing scribe and editor Kim
Francesca Martinez, who will now contribute her weekly "Fight Feed" column to
the site from this point forward. Check out her insightful debut below.
It’s not always sunshine in the ring. Our sport has weathered many a storm in recent months; among others, the loss of several beloved boxing personalities, the sudden (and radical) restructuring of Ring Magazine, cries of corruption among sanctioning body brass, superfights negotiated only to be extinguished (along with the hopes of dedicated fans).
Yet, it is with hope that we accept the bitter side of the sweet science—hope that talent and integrity will prevail, bringing both fighters and fans the competition and entertainment that they, respectively, seek. While all the kinks are being ironed out, however, laughter proves a powerful medicine.
With that said, welcome back to Fight Feed.
FIGHT FEED REBOOTED:
“Boxing is a negative business. It will suck the soul out of you… But that’s the one thing I’ve been able to take from boxing, the ability to laugh about situations. If you don’t, you lose your mind.” -promoter Lou DiBella (PHOTO: 20th Century Fox International)

S.F.'s Miller and Avenal's Ramirez Crowned National Champs!
By Ryan Maquiñana
Norcalboxing.net
S.F.'s Raquel Miller and Avenal's Jose Ramirez took gold in their National Championship bouts, while Pacific Grove's Jamie Mitchell fought valiantly in a decision loss to New York's Christina Cruz, earning silver.
"Hard work pays off," Miller said. "Keep pushing, keep dreaming, and putting God first. Thanks for the love, support, and prayers. They worked."
While Miller captured the 152-pound women's crown by defeating San Diego's Danyelle Wolf on the cards, Ramirez completed a triumphant run through America's 132-pounders with a clear decision win over Cleveland's Raynell Williams in a rematch of their two clashes at last year's Olympic Trials. Ramirez would make it three wins in three tries, but is aware there is still work to be done.
"I'm right back to the spot I want to be," he told ESPN.com.
Ramirez will move on the Americas Qualifier in May, an international competition where he must finish in the top four to finally punch his ticket to London for the 2012 Olympics. Although there will be no trip to England for Miller since she did not win the Olympic Trials, her victory Saturday netted her a spot on Team USA for the 2012 World Championships in China.
