VACAVILLE, CA -- The Georgie Duke Center was the scene Saturday night as Mateen Boxing hosted the first day of the 2012 USA Boxing Northern California Championships.
“There were some good matchups today, and I expect the same for tomorrow,” said tournament director Candelario “Candy” Lopez of San Jose PAL.
A total of three Novice Division and seven Open Division champions were crowned, with the fight of the night a welterweight slugfest between Luis Garcia of Richmond’s Juan’s Gym and eventual winner William Blake of Newcastle Ringside.
One wrinkle in the brackets this year involved awarding two champions in the men’s lightweight (132 lbs.) and welterweight (152 lbs.) Open Division weight classes on a count of an odd number of entrants and only two days to complete the tournament.
Sunday’s action will feature nine more title bouts (two Novice, seven Open), with an exhibition bout between unopposed champions Sacramento’s Brett Venegas of Golden State Bloodhounds and San Jose PAL’s Eros Correa, who will fight at the 114-pound limit for the non-tournament clash.
The 108-pound Correa was the Bay Area’s first Olympic Trials winner since Andre Ward, and like his fellow NorCal Open Division champions, he will advance to the National Championships in Fort Carson, Colo., at the end of February.
