Abner Mares Calls Out Nonito Donaire at 122

Abner Mares (right) would love a shot at Nonito Donaire down the line.

After vacating his IBF bantamweight belt yesterday, Abner Mares eyes a move up from 118 to 122 pounds that will hopefully include a showdown with newly crowned WBO junior featherweight champion Nonito Donaire of San Leandro.

"Becoming a world champion was very hard," Mares said, "but we've reached a stage where we decide things that are better for us and that's what the team selected, to move up to 122-pounds. We've seen all of the fighters at super bantamweight and I'm excited because there are no bad fighters. Personally, I would like a fight against Nonito Donaire, because they say he's the best, but there are others on the list Fernando Montiel, Victor Terrazas, Jorge Arce, Wilfredo Vazquez, Guillermo Rigondeaux and others like my (April 21) opponent, Eric Morel."

What remains to be seen however, is if the two fighters' promoters would even meet at the negotiating table. Top Rank and Golden Boy aren't exactly bosom buddies.
