It was a momentous day at the USA Boxing National Championships from Fort Carson, Colo., as the identity of the final eight in each weight class was finally determined.
While defending Olympic Trials champ and top-seeded Eros Correa of San Jose exited via walkover, the other two NorCal top seeds, super heavyweight LaRon Mitchell of San Francisco and Avenal's Jose Ramirez advanced to the quarterfinals.
Stockton heavyweight Antwon Abron impressed once again, pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament with a decision over No. 1 201-pounder Joseph Williams of New York.
Correa wasn't the only one who pulled out with illness. National Women's PAL featherweight champion Shanne Ruelas also lost by walkover when she was rendered too sick to compete.
In the opening day of combat for the ladies, San Francisco's Casey Morton and Pacific Grove's Jamie Mitchell punched their ticket for the quarters, with the latter outpointing fellow Central Cal fighter Maria Vizcaino of Watsonville.
The men's bantamweight duo of Sacramento's Mario Ayala and Fresno's Gary Salazar continued their winning ways, and Vacaville lightweight Adam Fiel joined them in the thinning group of locals who stayed alive.
In the higher weight classes, three welterweights entered Wednesday with title dreams, and only one would come out unscathed, as Fresno's Mark Hernandez defeated Newcastle's Will Blake, and Pittsburg's Michael Morales saw his run come to an end.
Oakland light heavyweight C.J. Mills and Redwood City heavyweight Clinton Nelson would conclude their journeys in the round of 16, while Bakersfield super heavyweight Charles Martin cruised to another victory.
Here are Wednesday's results, along with Thursday's matchups that include the first bouts in the flyweight division. Brett Venegas will see his first action at Nationals as an Open fighter, and fellow nationally-ranked Sactown native Marina Ramirez will also appear tomorrow at light flyweight.
In addition, Olympic Trials bronze medalist Raquel Miller descends from middleweight to welterweight in her Nationals debut.
