Raquel Miller has made a living out of beating the odds, and the amateur middleweight was more than vocal about it with registration officials last October when she arrived at the National PAL Tournament in Toledo, Ohio.

“I told them to remember my face,” the native of San Francisco’s Bay View District said, “because when the tournament was over, they’d be seeing it again."

With only a handful of previous bouts at the Open (Senior) level, and none of them taking place at her new heavier weight class of 165 pounds, few expected Miller to advance past the first round.

Much to the experts’ surprise, she would make a magical run to the semifinals that would eventually net the powerful slugger not only a third-place finish, but the eighth and final spot in the inaugural U.S. Women’s Olympic Team Trials, which begin Sunday in Airway Heights, Wash.
