Undercard Rumors Begin for Mayfield-Herrera Aug. 17 Show at Kezar

With the announcement of junior welterweight contender Karim Mayfield's homecoming bout at San Francisco's Kezar Pavilion against Mauricio Herrera on Aug. 17, a few local fighters' names have already been floated around to feature on the undercard according to several sources.

Hayward junior middleweight Aaron Coley (3-0, 1 KO) and San Francisco's Richard Hargaves (3-0-1, 2 KOs), who is planning to move back down to welterweight, have been mentioned as possibly appearing on the show against separate opponents.  In addition, San Bruno cruiserweight Joe Gumina (2-1, 2 KOs) would figure in the mix if the right foe can be found.

San Jose lightweight Andy Vences, last year's National PAL bronze medalist and National Adidas tournament champion, is supposedly slated to make his pro debut.

Perhaps the most intriguing rumor from a source was the likely return of former WBA welterweight champion James Page (25-4, 19 KOs) of Pittsburg, who has returned from a federal prison sentence and has been in discussions to face Abel Perry (18-5, 9 KOs) in a junior middleweight bout.  Perry was supposed to fight Antonio Margarito earlier this summer before Margarito retired.

If I may editorialize, getting any NorCal fighters on the show would definitely help attendance for what looks to be an exciting headliner.

The main event, for Mayfield's NABO 140-pound regional title, will be televised on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights.  Ticket information has not been announced yet.
