SJSU's Gomez, Cal's Ramos One Win Away from National Title

A pair of Bay Area college fighters are just one win away from national titles as a result of their triumphant performances Friday afternoon in the NCBA National Championship semifinals, which took place in Colorado Springs, Colo., on the Air Force campus.

San Jose State's Oscar Gomez advanced to Saturday's welterweight (147 lbs.) final with a hard-earned decision over West Virginia's Luis Quiles by decision.  The Spartan senior will face the Navy's R.J. Garcia.

Cal's Jose "Jay" Jimenez was stopped in the second round by Navy's Noah Weintraub, but due to his top four finish in the nation, the Golden Bear pugilist will still earn All-American honors in the junior middleweight (156 lbs.) division.

Meanwhile, teammate Juan Ramos will move on to the middleweight (165 lbs.) final after capturing a decision over Army's Zoar Morales.  Ramos will face Air Force's Casey Habluetzel in a rematch of the Western Regional final that was won by the Cal fighter, 3-2.
