Heavyweight contender Chazz Witherspoon, who was training in Hayward with reigning BWAA and CSNBayArea.com Trainer of the Year Virgil Hunter, was stopped in the third round Saturday night by Seth Mitchell in Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.

Witherspoon (30-3, 22 KOs), originally from Philadelphia, Pa., had his foe noticeably hurt in the opening frame but could not capitalize as Mitchell (25-0-1, 19 KOs), a former Michigan State linebacker, recovered in the second and took control with a barrage of power shots.

A left hook from Mitchell floored his opponent in the third, and soon after Witherspoon recovered on shaky ground.  However, as he backed into the ropes, a final barrage from Mitchell forced referee Randy Neumann to halt the bout.

Official time was 2:31.

In the main event, Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson met for the Ring Magazine and WBC light heavyweight titles.  Both fights were televised on HBO.
