"Bizy" Ben Bautista will live up to his moniker for the next two months, as the head man at SFC Boxing in downtown San Francisco has an active stable of fighters.
Saturday saw his son Izaiah drop a decision in the Region 11 Junior Olympic 101-pound final against Fresno's Conrad Rendon in Arvin, and pro featherweight Denis Madriz stopping Fresno's Luis Villagomez on cuts hours later in Woodland to earn his first pro win.
In addition to accompanying Karim Mayfield for his ESPN2-televised NABO junior welterweight regional title defense against Raymond Serrano in Albany, N.Y, this Friday, Bautista has corresponded with another charge, amateur welterweight Raquel Miller, half a world away.
"Rocky" just won her rematch with Canada's Myriam de Silva and will be advancing to the quarterfinals of the AIBA Women's World Championships in Qinhuangdao, China, against Jennifer Corti of Switzerland.
"We've been talking strategy through e-mail," Bautista said. "It's not ideal, but it will do."
Several of Bautista's pros have dates coming up. Junior middleweight Aaron Coley, fresh off a victory in his pro debut, returns June 2 in Montebello, Calif., against Stockton's John Dunham. Another 154-pounder, Richard Hargraves, travels to St. Paul, Minn., to take on Michael Faulk on June 23. One week later, Bautista's IBF women's flyweight champion, Ava Knight, makes the second defense of her title, possibly in Mexico.
