Andre Ward: "We'll Bring Chad Dawson Down to 168"

My interview with Andre in Atlantic City after he won the Super Six.

Unified super middleweight champion Andre Ward addressed the recent speculation on a potential fight with new light heavyweight boss Chad Dawson.

“That’s a fight that can be made and should be made,” Ward said before breaking down the bout.  “I think my style matches up well against any fighter.  I have to believe that.  If I don’t believe that, then I’m in the wrong business.  Chad is a very skillful fighter.  He’s a southpaw.  He’s a good fighter. We’re going to have to get it done if Chad Dawson is the next opponent.”

Ward, from Oakland, Calif., then talked about the proposed weight for such a clash.

“I think he said what he wanted to do on television,” Ward said of Dawson, who resides in New Haven, Conn.  “He said he’d come down to 168 [pounds], so we’re going to bring him down to ’68, and we’ll have the light heavyweight champion and super middleweight champion go at it if that’s the fight that’s next.”

Finally, Ward dismissed the thought that he would have an advantage under those circumstances since Dawson risked being weight-drained on the scale.

“I don’t know about drain,” Ward said.  “He said he could make the fight with no problems so we’ll see.  I don’t know what’s next, like I said, but that’s a fight that can be made and should be made so you got to stay tuned.  But hopefully we’ll have an announcement soon.”
