Fresno's Gary Salazar was eliminated in the 123-pound quarterfinals of the AIBA Youth World Championships in Yerevan, Armenia, losing by a 16-14 decision to Russia's Magomedrashid Dzahabrailov on Tuesday.
Trailing 11-7 heading into the final round, Salazar won the last frame 7-5 but was unable to make up the deficit against the Junior World Championships bronze medalist, according to USA Boxing.
Despite the loss, Salazar's three preceding victories were a welcome sign for the American amateur program, as the Central Valley native has introduced himself to the world stage in grand fashion.
