Sacramento's Otis Griffin dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Otis Rosinsky at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City in a bout for the New York State light heavyweight title Wednesday night.
According to a press release from Rosinsky's promoter, DiBella Entertainment, a cut opened over Rosinsky's left eye in round one, but he weathered the storm and Griffin's "big shots from the outside" to pull out the narrow points win.
Scores were 97-93 and 96-94 for Rosinsky, who rises to 17-2, 9 KOs. Griffin falls to 24-11-2, 10 KOs.
The fight card's proceeds benefited Hurricane Sandy victims and will air on CSN Bay Area/California at a later time to be announced.

Donaire flattened Arce in the third round. (PHOTOS: Chris Farina/Top Rank)
San Leandro’s Nonito Donaire might have locked up the Fighter of the Year after thrashing Jorge Arce in three rounds Saturday night at Houston’s Toyota Center to effectively defend his junior featherweight world title.
After a first round where he measured his foe, Donaire (31-1,
20 KOs) dropped Arce as the two traded right hands in the second stanza. From that point forward, Donaire dictated
subsequent terms of the bout, and they would be one-sided.
In the final minute of the third round, Donaire sent Arce (61-7-2,
46 KOs) to the canvas once more with another right hand and two solid left
hooks. Although the warrior from Los
Mochis, Mexico, would get up on shaky ground, the East Bay fighter would
swiftly finish him off with another signature spectacular left hook.

Weights from Los Angeles: Khan 139.75, Angulo 154.5
By Jake Donovan
BoxingScene.com
A massive fight card is planned for Saturday afternoon and evening at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California. In the SHOWTIME-televised main event (10:30PM ET/PT), Amir Khan takes on Carlos Molina in a 12-round super lightweight bout.
Khan came in at 139.75 lb, the same as Molina (17-0-1, 7KO), who takes a huge step up in class.

A massive fight card is planned for Saturday afternoon and evening at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California. In the SHOWTIME-televised main event (10:30PM ET/PT), Amir Khan takes on Carlos Molina in a 12-round super lightweight bout.
Khan is looking for his first win in more than 17 months, having lost
two straight. The former 140 lb. titlist suffered a devastating 4th
round knockout loss to Danny Garcia this past summer, having since
parted ways with trainer Freddie Roach in favor of the red-hot cornerman
Virgil Hunter in Hayward.
The televised co-feature covers the continued comeback of Hunter-trained Alfredo
Angulo (pictured, left), who enjoyed an emotional return to the ring last month. The
Mexican slugger weighed in just over the super welterweight limit of
154.5 lb for his chief support bout against Jorge Silva, who weighed in
at 156 lb.
Opening the Showtime telecast is a
heavyweight bout between Deontay Wilder and Kelvin Price. Wilder - who
captured Olympic Bronze in the 2008 Summer Games - weighed 223.5 lb.,
while Price checked in at 240 lb.
The two were slated to face off earlier this year, only for Price to be forced to pull out due to injury.
Kicking off the day's festivities is a live broadcast on CBS (Saturday,
4:30PM ET/1:30PM PT), marking the sport's return to the network in more
than 15 years. Headlining the free TV show is all-action bantamweight
titlist Leo Santa Cruz, who faces Alberto Guevara in a scheduled
12-round title defense. Both fighters weighed 117.5 lb, just below the
bantamweight limit.
Wedged in between the two
shows, Showtime will continue its recent trend of airing select
undercard bouts on sister network Showtime Extreme (Saturday, 9:00PM
ET). Unbeaten welterweight Shawn Porter will headline that portion of
the evening, facing former lightweight titlist Julio Diaz in a
crossroads bout.
Porter came in at a fit and trim 146 lb, while Diaz tipped the scales at 146.75 lb.
Opening
the Showtime Extreme card is another fighter on the comeback trail.
Unbeaten prospect Frankie Gomez looks to put more separation between
present day and his troubled past as he faces Pawel Miranda in a
scheduled eight-round welterweight bout.
Gomez
came in at 143.75 lb. for his second bout of the year, also doubling as
his delayed Showtime debut. A previous attempt to have him headline on
Shobox was thwarted by out-of-ring troubles.

Goossen: Ward Doesn't Need Surgery, Pavlik Fight Still Postponed
By Ryan Maquiñana
BoxingScene.com
Ward will be back. The question is when? (US Presswire)
Super middleweight champion Andre Ward’s promoter Dan Goossen has informed BoxingScene.com that his fighter will not need surgery after injuring his right shoulder in training.
“He had an MRI that revealed no damage and no tears,” Goossen said.
Ward (26-0, 14 KOs) was scheduled to fight former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (40-2, 34 KOs) in an HBO-televised event on Jan. 26 at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. An earlier report had the fight being moved to Feb. 23, but Goossen denied that date was set in stone.
“Nothing has been confirmed yet,” Goossen said. “We’re rescheduling it as we speak, and we’re looking at our options right now. I want Santa to bring me a good date.”

Tragedy Strikes, But Mendez Keeps Fighting
By Ryan Maquiñana
CSNBayArea.com
Programming note: Watch Paul Mendez on Chronicle Live at 5 p.m. PT Thursday, with replays at 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.
Boxing is a sport that tests one’s limits. Whether the task at hand entails incurring nonstop punishment to the skull and ribcage, or convincing the mind that enduring another three minutes of it is possible, a professional practitioner of the sweet science is often lauded for his valor under such severe conditions.
Middleweight Paul Mendez (10-2-1, 4 KOs) has battled through bruised limbs and bloody cuts gushing down his face. Without even blinking, however, he’ll tell you that it all pales in comparison to the fight that 10-year-old Sy Sherman of Salinas faces every breathing second.
“No doubt Sy’s the bravest member of our team,” said Mendez, who takes on Lester Gonzalez at the Salinas Storm House Saturday night (TeleFutura, 11 p.m.). “I don’t know how he does it, but he’s just got so much heart.”

Mendez-Gonzalez: Solo Boxeo Card Set in Salinas
By Ryan Maquiñana
Norcalboxing.net
Middleweight prospect Paul Mendez will headline this Saturday’s Solo Boxeo Tecate card in a 10-rounder against rugged veteran Lester Gonzalez at the Storm House in Salinas, Calif. TeleFutura will handle the broadcast.
Mendez (10-2-1, 4 KOs), a 23-year-old from Delano, Calif., who has been training in Salinas at the Garcia Boxing Gym since June, is riding a five-bout unbeaten streak. In his last outing, which also aired on TeleFutura, an improved “El Gallo Negro” stopped fellow prospect DonYil Livingston in the seventh round.
“It was a good win, and I have to credit working with the Garcias,” Mendez told BoxingScene.com/CSNBayArea.com. “I’m stronger, faster, and smarter in the ring. Lester’s a tough fighter and I know I have to beat him to keep my momentum going, so I have to make the most of this opportunity on TeleFutura.”
Gonzalez (12-7-4, 6 KOs), a San Diego southpaw via Havana, Cuba, is best known for posting the first blemishes on the ledgers of up-and-comers Bastie Samir (split draw) and Omar Henry (technical draw after accidental headbutt). Having taken top prospects like Brandon Gonzales and Matt Korobov the distance, Gonzalez’s last six foes have a combined record of 78-2-2. Many observers, including this writer, felt Gonzalez did enough to beat Samir.
Mendez will be fighting with a heavy heart on Saturday. His trainer as an amateur, Michael Dallas Sr. of the Bakersfield PAL, passed away last month due to cancer. Meanwhile, Mendez has been making trips to Stanford University Hospital to visit Sy Sherman, a 10-year-boy from Salinas who is battling the same disease.
“It’s been tough, definitely,” Mendez said. “Mike Dallas Sr. was a mentor to me, both in and out of the ring, and his son Mike Jr. is a good friend of mine. I know that whenever I fight, I’m part of his legacy and I won’t let him down. “As for Sy, they said he only had a couple days to live, but that was a few weeks ago and he’s still here. He’s such a fighter. He just inspires us all to never give up, and we’re dedicating this fight to him."
In the six-round televised co-feature, undefeated junior welterweight Jonathan Garcia takes on Rodolfo Armenta. Garcia (9-0, 7 KOs) has begun to make a name for himself around Northern California boxing circles for his offensive prowess.
The native of nearby Watsonville, Calif., strings his punches together well and is an excellent finisher, as evidenced by his first-round knockout of Pedro Arcos in August. Garcia rose from the canvas twice to deck Arcos three times and deliver a thrilling come-from-behind victory. Armenta (12-8-1, 9 KOs), from Los Mochis, Mex., is 2-3 in his last five, but all three losses came to fighters with a combined record of 48-0. One of those defeats in May was an exciting slugfest where he went all 10 rounds with then 13-0 Mark Salser on TeleFutura. Armenta got back in the win column last month with a unanimous decision over Wilbert Ortiz.
The undercard features the return of former welterweight contender Jose Celaya (31-6, 16 KOs), who last fought three years ago and seemingly ended his career with three straight losses—one of which came at the hands of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by eighth-round stoppage. But Celaya has decided to make a comeback at super middleweight, and in a Central California matchup, the former regional beltholder from Salinas will meet Fresno’s Loren Myers (8-17-1, 2 KOs) in a four-rounder.
Also on the card, a potential fight of the night might be brewing between Northern California-based junior welterweights Jonathan Chicas (8-0, 4 KOs) and Moris Rodriguez (3-1, 2 KOs). Chicas, the brightest prospect to come out of San Francisco since current 140-pound contender Karim Mayfield, hopes to finish the year a perfect 5-0.
The versatile boxer-puncher will have his hands full with Rodriguez, a Chico native who scored a NorCal Knockout of the Year candidate of Bret De La Torre in May, is coming off a close decision loss to Keandre Gibson that some ringside spectators felt should have gone the other way.
Welterweight Preston Freeman (2-0, 1 KO), a St. Louis product who also trains at Garcia Boxing in Salinas, faces pro debutant Vicente Guzman of nearby Tulare. Guzman was a successful amateur at 141 pounds, having advanced to the Northern California Golden Gloves finals in the past.
Rounding out the card is Watsonville welterweight Oscar Godoy against Javier Gomez of Tijuana, Mex. Godoy (8-2, 3 KOs) earned arguably the biggest win of his fledgling career thus far against decorated amateur Richard Hargraves in August. Gomez (13-9, 9 KOs) has displayed heavy hands but holds just three triumphs over fighters with winning records, and his last outing in October ended by first-round knockout loss to unbeaten Jose Zepeda.
Friday's 5 p.m. weigh-in is open to the public and will take place at 2 Steps Ahead (832 S. Main Street) in Salinas.
Golden Boy will promote the event in association with Don Chargin, Paco Presents, and Jorge Marron. Tickets, priced at $25, $45, and $65, are available online at pacopresentsboxing.com or by calling (831) 757-5658 or (831) 754-1452.

Fresno's Salazar Eliminated in Youth Worlds Quarterfinals by Russian
By Ryan Maquiñana
Norcalboxing.net
Fresno's Gary Salazar was eliminated in the 123-pound quarterfinals of the AIBA Youth World Championships in Yerevan, Armenia, losing by a 16-14 decision to Russia's Magomedrashid Dzahabrailov on Tuesday.
Trailing 11-7 heading into the final round, Salazar won the last frame 7-5 but was unable to make up the deficit against the Junior World Championships bronze medalist, according to USA Boxing.
Despite the loss, Salazar's three preceding victories were a welcome sign for the American amateur program, as the Central Valley native has introduced himself to the world stage in grand fashion.

Fresno's Salazar Stops Al-Ezirej, Advances to AIBA Youth Worlds Quarterfinals
By Ryan Maquiñana

Gary Salazar continued his torrid pace at the AIBA Youth World Championships in Yerevan, Armenia, as he stopped Iraq's Sahm Qarrar Al-Ezirej in the third round of their 123-pound clash. The Fresno native now moves on Tuesday's quarterfinals to face Russia's Magomedrashid Dzahabrailov.
"Well it was a little tougher then I expected," Salazar said. "The guy was no sack. He was one of those fighters who came to win, but I was able to break him down with pressure and staying on his chest all three rounds. I was constantly hitting him to the body and chest, and then I was able to stop him after three 8-counts, one in each round."

VACAVILLE, Calif. – Manuel “Tino” Avila remained unbeaten, stopping
fellow prospect Ricky Lopez in the eighth round Saturday night at the Georgie
Duke Center in a main event that aired on TeleFutura.
The 20-year-old Avila (11-0, 4 KOs), 121.5, who was fighting
in the same venue that houses his training headquarters, was mired in a close contest
with Lopez, 123.5 heading into the last frame. However, the hometown hero concluded the
contest with a furious bombardment of left hooks that caused two knockdowns
from which Lopez would not recover. Referee
Dan Stell called it off at 1:09.
“I needed this round bad, and I dropped him,” said Avila, a
native of nearby Fairfield. “He was
getting tired and dropping his hands, so I got him with that left hook. It was amazing having this crowd in
Vacaville. They really gave me a big boost tonight.”
