Introducing Lateef Kayode

The metronomic sounds from the speed bag make sweet music to a boxing aficionado’s eardrum. In the world famous Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, such noise is commonplace. But this time, the booming blasts coming from the bag on 1123 Vine are more raucous than usual. Even the untrained ear can distinguish the difference between the impact from an average set of fists and the percussion coming from the imposing figure with the chiseled hands who answers to the name “Power”.

But Lateef Kayode isn’t just someone who looks the part. At 10-0, with only the first win out of the ten going the distance, the 27-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria, is primed for a run to the top of the cruiserweight division. Such aspirations were pipe dreams three years ago when he was sitting at a phone booth in the middle of Atlanta, fed up with boxing and all set to take the next flight back home. However, with Freddie Roach in his corner and Gary Shaw now behind him as his promoter, Kayode has the pieces in place to make the rest of his stay in America a little more memorable than the cross-country nightmare he endured his first days here.
