The summer of discontent continues for the local boxing scene, as not
a single fighter in CSNBayArea.com’s NorCal Pound-for-Pound Top 10 has
recorded a victory since May, when No. 5 Ava Knight outpointed Linda
Soto.
Since our last poll in July, No. 8 Carina Moreno and No. 9 Ana
Julaton both incurred decision losses, further contributing to a dismal
2013 where No. 2 Nonito Donaire, No. 3 Robert Guerrero, and No. 10
Vicente Escobedo have already tasted defeat.
This tally doesn’t even include No. 6 Brandon Gonzales, who was
robbed by the judges of a win in June against Thomas Oosthiuzen and had
to settle for a draw.
Perhaps No. 4 Karim Mayfield can stop the slump on September 28, when
the San Franciscan faces Pavel Miranda in a bout that he is expected to
win. With Guerrero, Donaire, and No. 1 Andre Ward also scheduled to
fight in the upcoming months, some measure of equilibrium should be
attained by year’s end.
Until then, Alejandro Perez has usurped Moreno in the 8th spot. The
North Salinas slugger stretched his winning streak to three after
overwhelming Edgar Riovalle on UniMás in July. The currently inactive
Vicente Escobedo rises one notch to No. 9, while Moreno drops to the
final slot on the poll, bumping Julaton out.
Let’s take a look at the latest news on the NorCal Pound-for-Pound Top 10 for September.
