VIDEO: Ward on Dawson Fight Locale, Religion, Pacquiao-Bradley

Super middleweight king Andre Ward returned
to the Comcast SportsNet Bay Area studios Thursday afternoon to touch on a
variety of subjects, the first being the location of his upcoming Sept. 8 fight
with light heavyweight champ Chad Dawson.
“Chad and I are in the process of negotiating, and in the
process of negotiations, anything can happen, so this is a day-to-day situation,”
Ward told CSN Bay Area’s Henry Wofford. “Obviously
the fans in the Bay Area know where I want to fight, and that’s Oracle
Arena. That remains to be seen, but at
the moment, it’s up in the air.”
The conversation then shifted to Ward’s “Son of God” moniker
and how his religious values come into play when he’s in the ring.
“Boxing is a violent sport.
Everyone knows that,” Ward said. “But
when it comes to my faith, when it comes to my nickname, it’s just who I
am. It’s not something I try to put
on. I think it boils down to a heart
issue.
“Believe it or not, even though I’m in a contact sport, a
very violent sport, my desire is not to hurt anybody. I hope and wish the best for my
opponent. I want him to go home to his
family just like I want to go home to mine.
“It’s a competition thing.
I’m a competitor, and at the end of the day, I just want to win the
fight, get my hand raise, and go home and kiss my wife and kids. And I hope my
opponent can do the same thing.”
Wofford then asked for Ward’s take on how Floyd Mayweather’s
notoriety has been largely the result of his constantly giving the media “bulletin
board material” to work with, and the underlying contrast with the “good guys”
of the sport.
“I try to be one of them,” Ward said. “I know Manny Pacquiao is one of them. And believe it or not, I know Floyd personally. I’ve been around Floyd, and Floyd’s really a
good-natured person.
“He’s created ‘Money’ Mayweather as a character, and not
everyone likes what he does or says, and neither do I agree with it, but it’s
made him a lot of money and that’s his prerogative.
“But for myself and even a person like Manny Pacquiao, it’s
just amazing to see that you can have a person who’s clean-cut, a person who
loves people and who is an ambassador for the sport—and in Manny Pacquiao’s
case, and even in my case, an ambassador for their country.
“But then you know when they turn the switch on, when it’s
time to go to work, it’s time to do battle.
But when the battle’s over, you can turn the switch off.”
The discussion then concluded with a request for Ward to
break down Saturday’s WBO welterweight title showdown between Manny Pacquiao
and Timothy Bradley.
“It’s tough to say," Ward said.
"Timothy is a fighter I fought as an amateur at 147 pounds and he is a
warrior. Timothy Bradley, one of his
greatest assets is his mind. So I think
it’s going to be a tough fight for Pacquiao.
“There’s always some drama in the Pacquiao camp. There’s always something about maybe he’s not
training enough or possibly overtraining.
I hear Alex Ariza, his longtime strength and conditioning coach, is at
odds with Freddie Roach. That’s never
good in a training camp.
“So all those different things collectively could come into
play in the fight, and then once again, given Timothy Bradley’s mindset, he always
comes in tip-top shape. There may be an
upset brewing, and it may be in Timothy Bradley’s favor.”
Ward was originally scheduled to travel to New York City for
this week’s Boxing Writers Association of America annual dinner to receive his
2011 Fighter of the Year Award, but decided to remain in the Bay Area to be
with his wife Tiffiney, who is expecting the couple’s fourth child in the
middle of this month.

Fundraiser for Sacramento Junior Olympic Hopefuls Saturday

Caballero's Boxing Club is trying to send two of the top amateurs from the Sacramento area to the National Junior Olympics, but they need a little help.
The gym will hold an event this Saturday at 3 p.m. to benefit 122-pounder Alberto Torres and 132-pounder Nancy Gutierrez in order to help with travel costs and other expenses for the tournament later this month, which will be held in Mobile, Alabama.
The cover charge for the fundraiser will be $5.00, and there will be both Mexican and Filipino food on hand. The gym's goal is to raise $2,000 to make the kids' Junior Olympic dreams come true.
People who are unable to attend Saturday's event are more than welcome to donate money online to Caballero's through Paypal. Click HERE to do that.

Glenn Donaire Injures Knee, June 15 Fight Off

Glenn “Filipino Bomber” Donaire (19-4-1, 10 KOs) has injured his left knee and has pulled out of a June 15 Telemundo main event against Daniel Lozano (11-0, 8 KOs).
“I was supposed to defend my belt in Florida,” the regional flyweight titleholder said. “It would have been a good fight, and I was training hard, but I got hurt. I was doing my sprints running up a hill, and then I was jogging back down the hill I just felt something twist. It hurt so bad. When I got home, it got swollen for three or four days.”
A trip to the doctor confirmed his concerns. “He examined my knee, and he said nothing was torn, but there was some major swelling. He told me not to do anything for two weeks, so I couldn’t go through with the fight,” Donaire added. “I’ll probably be back to 100 percent by August. I can move around in the ring a little bit, but I can’t run.”
In the meantime, he touched on a few subjects, namely his dream fight that would vindicate his comeback from a three-year layoff—a move back down to 108 pounds to face explosive WBA junior flyweight titlist Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez of Nicaragua (32-0, 27 KOs).

Northern California homecoming.
After spending his last training camp in Las Vegas, the San
Leandro native returned to his familiar confines of the Undisputed Gym in San
Carlos last month to prepare for his July 7 junior featherweight unification
tilt against IBF champ Jeffrey Mathebula (26-3-2, 14 KOs) at the Home Depot
Center in Carson, Calif.
In an interview with this writer for Comcast SportsNet Bay
Area, the WBO 122-pound champion talked about the move back west.
“The Bay Area is always going to be my home no matter what. Over here, I have my people and my team who I
trust in the ring,” Donaire (28-1, 18 KOs) told CSNBayArea.com. “It’s great to be back. It’s great to be here. This is home, and one thing about the desire
and determination to work hard is here.”
San Jose's McMorrow Receives Her WBO Title Belt

San Jose's Melissa McMorrow received her WBO world title belt today, and she wasted no time in prominently displaying it at her training grounds of the B Street Boxing Gym in San Mateo.
McMorrow shocked the world on May 16 when she traveled to Germany and secured a majority decision victory over previously unbeaten WBO/WBA/WIBF flyweight champion Susi Kentikian. (The WBA was not on the line for the fight.)
The belt was crafted by Sartonk Designs, who make most of the world championship diadems out there, including those awarded by the IBF and IBO. They also produce regional belts as seen on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights last month when San Francisco's Karim Mayfield held his NABO title aloft with pride after stopping Raymond Serrano.

The Rock Boxing Club show in Salinas last Saturday saw a pair of fighters from the 415 Boxing Club in San Francisco put their talents on display.
California Silver Gloves champ Cameron Smith, a promising 10-year-old 77-pounder, won a decision over Mader's Braulio Jimenez of Madtown Boxing Club. William Young, a 14-year-old 106-pounder, dropped a close decision to Chastin Sharble of Gilroy's Bad Intentions Boxing. A third 415 BC fighter, National Silver Gloves silver medalist Suray Mahmutovic, was scheduled to fight in a 156-pound bout with San Martin Boxing Club's Jesus Gomez, but the matchup never materialized.
The City-based club will return to action at Velarde's Training Center in Fresno next Saturday with Smith, Young, 9-year-old California Silver Gloves silver medalist Jesse Lujano, and 11-year-old 2010 California Silver Gloves gold medalist Mario Lopez all slated to fight.

Madriz-Villagomez II Set for Tulare July 1

Norcalboxing.net has been advised that San Francisco featherweight Denis Madriz will fight a four-round immediate rematch against Fresno's Luis Villagomez on July 1 in Tulare, likely at the city's fairgrounds.
In their first fight in Woodland last May 12, Madriz dropped Villagomez with a left hook in the early moments. However, Villagomez recovered and did well enough to arguably draw even heading into the fourth and final round. But the ring physician would step in and rule that a cut over Villagomez' right eyebrow was too deep for him to continue.
While Team Madriz contends the cut was caused by a punch, Villagomez and his trainer disagree.
"Well, it was a headbutt," said Villagomez' trainer, Frank Aleman. "I'm pretty sure Luis was on his way to a win, whether it was a stoppage or a four round decision. It was a tough fight, but we hope this will be a better fight for us with a better outcome."
The first fight brought the fans to their collective feet over nine brief minutes, and the combatants are sure to repeat the feat on July 1.

Meanwhile, at the Quiet Cannon in Montebello, Hayward junior middleweight Aaron "Heavy Metal" Coley (2-0, 1 KO) returned to the site of his successful pro debut with a second-round stoppage of Stockton's John Dunham (1-9-1). In other action on the card, Sanger's Jose Alvarez (2-1) cruised to a unanimous decision over Danny Garcia (5-2, 3 KOs).
